Initially a left-arm spinner, he overcame the "yips" to reinvent himself into a highly patient, technically disciplined opening test batsman for the Black Caps. After retiring from cricket in 2004, he built a massive career in media, co-hosting The Crowd Goes Wild, The AM Show, and anchoring all seasons of Three's reality series The Block NZ until its axing in 2024.
